I want to take a minute to tell you about my story.

You see, most people don’t know this but growing up I was one of the skinniest guys out there.

I had skinny arms, no chest, and tiny pins as legs…I had NOTHING.

Here is a photo just to show you how skinny I really was…

But eventually, I plateaued.

My strength in my lifts plateaued as well.

Again, I tried pretty much everything out there…

Think about it; how many diets, supplements and programs could they continue to sell if you actually got in great shape?

 None, right?

So they’ve flooded the market with useless diets, powders, fad programs, supplements and other junk that does NOTHING but give you false hope that maybe, just maybe, this will be the one thing that works to help you achieve your goals.

There’s also a bunch of 6 and 12 week cookie cutter programs online…that just set people up for failure, and often people just regain all the fat they’ve lost after the 6-8 week period is up anyway because they can’t sustain what they were doing.

8 Common fat loss protocols… & Why They Don’t Work For You

High volume programs (Too many training days and too many sets and exercises)

It’s super important to have a training program set-up with the correct amount of volume specific to your training age.

I see too many guys using programs that are far too advanced for them.

Yes, volume is one of the main driving factors for building muscle (sets x reps x load).

However, too much volume means it is too difficult for you to recover from and therefore you’ll be shooting yourself in the foot.

This means you’ll end up going backward instead of forwards.

For someone with less training experience, you do not want volume to be too high, otherwise, you won’t be able to recover properly and won’t be able to best “milk out your gains” in the long run.

It’s important that the program has just enough volume for you and your training age, but not too much volume that you cannot recover from.

Just like your diet, it must be catered to you and your goals, so you can maximize your results.

Weight gain shakes

I see a lot of people taking these high calorie shakes and mass gainers, and all they’re doing is they’re going to gain a ton of fat and barely any muscle.

A lot of these weight gain powders are just filled with sugar and empty calories and they’re going to do nothing for you, other than make your waistline bigger.

Once again, these are filled with tons of poor-quality ingredients and they’re just going to make you fat.

Not to mention that you are going to pour a lot of your hard-earned money down the toilet. These weight gain shakes are super expensive.

What’s more, there is a limit on how much muscle you can build each and every month.

That means if you go over this monthly weight gain figure (and consuming these weight gain shakes is an easy way to do that) you’ll be gaining a lot more fat than muscle, I can assure you.

Clean eating

This is a big misconception.

You see, a lot of people will tell you that all you need to do is just eat clean and train hard and you will build a ton of brand-new muscle.


You must be in a calorie surplus to build new muscle. That therefore means it does not matter how clean and healthy the foods you’re eating are, you’re not going to build one ounce of muscle if you’re not within a calorie surplus.

A calorie surplus means you’re eating more calories than you’re burning.

Yes, most of your kcals should come from whole food. But that’s not to say that you can’t have a little bit of processed food in moderation as long as you’re creating a calorie surplus.

This is another big mistake people are making, they’re simply not eating enough calories to grow.

Once again, it doesn’t matter how healthy or clean the foods you’re eating are, if you’re not in a calorie surplus, you will not gain muscle.


Bodybuilding split routines

This is where I see 90% of gym users going wrong when they’re trying to build muscle.

They are focused on using bodybuilding split routines and focused on using training programs that are used by drug-assisted trainees.

Why would you follow a routine designed for someone who takes drugs?

It doesn’t make sense does it?

Now, I’m not saying you can’t get some results following a routine like this.

However, if you want to maximize your results as a natural trainee, this is not the most optimal and efficient approach to use.

Here’s why…

Training body parts just once per week means that volume is lower throughout the week.

Remember, that volume is the main driver for building muscle. Therefore, by just training body parts once per week, volume will be lower.

By training body parts more than once per week, it means that volume will be much higher by default.

Also, by training body parts multiple times per week, it makes it easier to make strength gains.

Remember, lifting weights is a skill. Therefore, the more you practice, the more efficient you become and the stronger you become.

What’s more, you’ll also be stimulating muscle protein synthesis more frequently for each body part.

In short, if you follow one of these bodybuilding split routines, you will NOT maximize your muscular potential.

What’s more, you’ll build muscle at a slower rate, too.

It’s far more optimal training body parts at least twice per week.

Focusing on the pump

This is a huge misconception that people get confused about.

This idea of just focusing on the pump is put forward by drug-assisted bodybuilders.

Again, why would you listen to drug-assisted bodybuilders if you’re a natural trainee?

In fact, there exists studies where individuals taking performance enhancing drugs would gain muscle WITHOUT even having to train! It just goes to show how powerful drugs are even with no training.

If you’re just focusing on the pump, it means you’re not focused on progressive overload or increasing volume which are the main drivers of growth.

Again, I see so many people making this mistake.

In short, you’re not going to build any new muscle if you’re just focused on the pump and you’re not getting stronger over time or adding more volume.

You should be focused on progressive overload and not the pump.

Testosterone boosters

You see, what people fail to realize with testosterone boosters is this:

Most natural testosterone boosters will fail to boost your testosterone levels at all.

And even if they do (e.g. let’s say you were deficient in some vitamin/mineral that the T-booster provides), they would only slightly boost your testosterone within the natural physiological range.

To see any big changes to strength and size, you need to be within the super physiological doses. I.e. taking drugs.

Natural testosterone boosters do not put you anywhere near this.

Therefore, you are literally pouring all your hard-earned money down the drain by taking these.

You see, a lot of these companies have large marketing departments that are built to trick you into thinking taking their supplement will get you results like you would if you took drugs.

Save your money and avoid these supplements.

Dirty bulking

This is another big mistake I see time and time again.

The idea is just to eat as many calories as possible and you’ll build muscle.

However, the actual result is you’ll gain a ton of body fat and not much muscle at all.

Yes, you need to be within a calorie surplus to build muscle.

However, it’s important to note that you can only gain muscle at a certain rate, if you start adding more lbs/kgs per month over this figure, that is going to be fat and not much else.

And guess what? Our bodies actually become LESS efficient at building muscle as our body fat % INCREASES…

Which is why so many individuals fail with their bulking attempts – they end up gaining way too much fat and barely any muscle.

Remember, the goal within the muscle-building phase is to gain muscle while minimizing as much fat gain as possible.

If you’re just eating as many calories as possible, you will just gain fat.

Not resting long enough between sets

You see, when it comes to weight training…it is critical you are having sufficient rest periods…so that you can use maximal loads for each and every set.

I see so many guys focus on short rest periods, only to shoot themselves in the foot because short rest periods mean they will have to lower the weight significantly.

As a result, this means volume will be lower and you won’t be maximizing your muscle-building efforts.

Make sure you’re giving yourself plenty of time between sets.

Remember, if you’re not resting long enough to move maximal loads for every single set, you’re leaving a lot of gains on the table.

What's the difference between the BUILD and SHRED programs?
